Ghana: Foreign Minister temporarily closes down embassy in Washinton DC.

Ghana has announced the temporary closure of its embassy in Washington DC for a “system overhaul.” It has also recalled all foreign affairs staff posted to the embassy over alleged corruption practices. In a Facebook post, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says this follows a special audit that revealed an illegal scheme to extort extra funds from visa and passport applicants by a local embassy’s IT department staff. Other drastic measures taken by the country include the dissolution of the embassy’s IT department, suspension of all locally recruited staff at the embassy, and possible prosecution of all persons involved.
