Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been inaugurated as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, after taking the oath of office.
His victory in the February 25 polls is steeped in controversy, as the election was marred by widespread allegations of corruption, including voter suppression, vote buying, manipulation of electoral rolls, compromised officials, and a lack of accountability.
At the inauguration dinner, Tinubu expressed his unwavering commitment to delivering on his promises to revive Nigeria’s growth trajectory, despite the challenges of corruption, poverty, and policy inconsistencies.
Outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, in his farewell address, expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests who honoured Nigeria with their presence, underscoring the successful electoral process that restored power to the Nigerian electorate. He also apologized for some economic policies of his administration that caused suffering to Nigerians. Buhari commended the aggrieved candidates for believing in the Nigerian judiciary by approaching the court for redress, but assured them that the results were “credible” and the vote was “fair and transparent”.
