Ghana’s Accra Zoo has been closed down.
The move by the Forestry Commission is to allow for investigations into the death of the middle-aged man who reportedly scaled the fence and entered the lions’ cage.
The Head of Corporate Affairs and Media Relations at the Forestry Commission, Joyce Ofori Kwafo said a staff member of the Accra Zoo was making his usual rounds and noticed a lifeless body in the lion cage. He approached the body and found it dead. So he called a local police after which the body was conveyed to the morgue.
During an internal investigation, it was discovered that the deceased intruded. The zoo which is situated in the Achimota Forest. a suburban area of the capital Accra, hosts several tourists daily.
The Forestry Commission, an institution that plays an oversight role over the zoo, further cleared the authorities of the zoo of any blame. The zoo has since been closed down.
