John Mahama, the presidential candidate of Ghana’s largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to prosecute all corrupt officials from the incumbent NPP administration if he wins the election this year.
Recently, multiple labor unions nearly resorted to a strike to stop the government from divesting several state properties, including prestigious hotels owned by the Social Security and Insurance Trust (SSNIT), to a current minister, Bryan Acheampong. These hotels represent investments by SSNIT, intended to support the payment of contributors’ pensions and social security benefits.
John Mahama prioritizes addressing the contentious national cathedral project, which has created a significant void in a prime Accra location, costing approximately $300 million, and the failed electricity privatization deal. He has pledged a revitalized campaign against corruption, aiming to “reset Ghana and reverse the trend” of corruption before the forthcoming elections.
