On Sunday, a Tanzania passenger plane operated by Precision Air crash-landed in Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria.
At least three people were reportedly killed in the crash, which occurred after the plane failed to make it to the nearby Bukoba airport.
The Precision Air flight was carrying 43 people, including 39 passengers and four crew members, according to the airline and Kagera provincial Commissioner Albert Chalamila.
The cause of the crash is yet to be established, but the state broadcaster said the air crash took place amid storms and heavy rains.’
Precision Air, Tanzania’s largest privately owned airline, identified the aircraft as an ATR-48.
In a statement, the airline said,
“We regret to announce that Precision Air flight no PW 494 operated with ATR-48 aircraft (IPWF), with 39 passengers onboard, (38 adults and 1 infant) flying from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba has been involved in an accident as it was approaching Bukoba Airport and crash landed in Lake Victoria.
“The rescue is ongoing and we can confirm 26 passengers have been rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical care. No death has been confirmed at the moment.
“An investigation team consisting of Precision Air technical staff and TAA has also departed to join the rescue team on the ground. We have established information centers in Bukoba and Dar es Salaam, for Dar es Salaam the center will be at Blue Saphire Hotel-Vingunguti, and for Bukoba the center will be at ELCT Hotel.â€
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan called for calm as the rescue operation continued.
“I have received with sadness the news of the accident involving Precision Air’s plane,†she tweeted. “Let’s be calm at this moment when rescuers are continuing with the rescue mission while praying to God to help us.â€
