It has emerged that all 138 members of Ghanaian parliament Majority Caucus support the call for Ghana’s Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta to be sacked after an attempt by 80 members of parliament. (MP)
Joining the fray were137 Minority MPs of the minority who also have a motion for the vote of censure against the minister approved.
The secret vote on November 10 is most likely to succeed since the law states that only two thirds of all MPs must vote in support of the motion for it to pass.
If it passes, the appointment of the finance minister would be revoked immediately, and it would be the first in Ghana’s history.
President Nana Akuffo Addo has refused to sack the minister and his deputy, Adu Boahen despite numerous appeals from the Ghanaian public.
A founding member of the NPP and an eminent economist, Kwame Pianim, also joined the call to fire the minister, but the president would not heed. President Akuffo Addo’s reason for delaying his finance minister’s exit is linked to the current deal going on between the IMF and the government over a $3 billion bailout cash.
The minority caucus of Ghanaian parliament state among others the despicable conflict of interest and excessive borrowing as reasons the president’s cousin must go.
